The Brandon Agency Tunes In Radio Blitz to Boost Entrants Into World Am Golf Tournament

The Brandon Agency is always looking for ways to provide more media exposure for our clients. Sometimes our clients have events, big events, that require big media outreach. The Brandon Agency is in the midst of a radio media tour blitz that is producing results for such an event. Here’s the story:

Finding people to play in a golf tournament in the “Golf Capital of the World” of Myrtle Beach is usually not a hard thing to do. Who wouldn’t want to play on some of the best courses in the state, the Southeast, or even in the country? At least that’s what Golf Digest, Golfweek, Golf World and GOLF magazine keep telling us.

But try finding 3,000 or more people to play in a golf tournament – that’s a little bit more challenging. The 27th annual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship is known as the “every person’s U.S. Open” and is considered the largest amateur golf event in the world. People from all 50 states and as many as 20 countries are expected to attend this year, but getting the word out about the event and how to enter are crucial to getting 3,000 or more people to come to Myrtle Beach for five days at the end of August.

Public relations plays a vital role in the success of the tournament, especially advance publicity to promote the event. In mid-May, registrants for the World Am barely totaled 1,100. The Brandon Agency public relations staff formulated a radio media tour for Dave Macpherson, tournament director for the World Am, and scheduled him on sports talk radio stations and golf specific shows so he could inform people about the event. The goal was two-fold: 1) To create awareness for the 27th annual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship and 2) To encourage people to visit WorldAmGolf.com and register to participate in the tournament.

From May 8 - 29, Dave Macpherson appeared on five radio shows in the following cities: Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Columbia and Asheville. He also appeared on a local NBC television affiliate in Myrtle Beach. During the time period, the number of people registering to play in the World Am jumped from 1,136 to 1,848, a 38.5 percent increase. The radio media tour will continue with efforts to secure air time in the following markets: Chicago, Dallas, Orlando, Washington, D.C., Charleston, Greenville (S.C. and N.C.), Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington.

On June 8, the total number of players registered for the World Am totaled more than 2,200 – the highest total on this date ever leading up to the event. The goal is 3,000 or more people entered to play in the World Am. Public relations strategies and tactics creating advance publicity via electronic and print media will play a major role in the success of the 27th annual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship. Now, who wants to play some golf in Myrtle Beach?
